Schwarzenegger muscle behind US World Cup bid
Posted On 06/03/2009 10:32:51 by K1ry

California’s governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has given his support to the US bid to host football’s World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

The International Herald Tribune reports that the former film star’s support is key to the bid, as several venues in his state are traditionally used for international football matches. The 1994 World Cup and 1999 Women’s World Cup final both took place at the Rose Bowl, while the 2003 World Cup final took place at the Home Depot Centre; both venues are in Los Angeles.

“Soccer is the world’s most popular sport and California has been home to some of its most exciting games, and I am proud to be a part of bringing the World Cup back to the United States,” Schwarzenegger said

“The millions of fans from around the globe that will travel to the United States to cheer their teams will prove a great benefit for our state, our nation and the world of soccer.”
