Nike’s attempts to wrestle the national German soccer team kit contract from arch-rivals adidas has failed.
According to reports, a US$680m deal was put on the table by Nike executives to tie-up the contract in an eight-year deal.
But instead German soccer chiefs opted to remain with adidas until 2018. Some reports suggest adidas was offering close to half the deal presented by its rival.
Adidas has long had a deal with the German team and saw its relationship extended in a vote by executives.
However, it was not unanimously passed. Representatives from the Bundesliga wanted to go for the more lucrative Nike deal.
It is understood adidas will pay $27m a year until 2014 and then $34m a year for the remaining four years.
